Head Coach Justin Waiters said that this was his team’s best game of the season so far.

“We’re starting to gel together and are doing a good job racking up points,” he said.

Scott’s Branch High School’s varsity boys were defeated 66-52 on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at C.E. Murray in Greeleyville. 

Head Coach Steven Nelson said that the boys had a good start in the first quarter, leading 20-16, and were losing by just four points, 34-30 at the half. The boys fell apart in third quarter being outscored 14-6, but came back up in the fourth, scoring 16 to C.E. Murray’s 18.

Leading scorers were Kaela Phillips with eight points and Shannon Corbett with six points. Abigail Jenkinson brought down 11 rebounds. Bailey Connors had eight rebounds.

With this win, the J.V. Lady Saints are 8-0 on the season.

“The game wasn’t as close as the score implies,” said Head Varsity Girls Coach Mike Lowder. “This was a good win for us with some great ball handling on the floor.”

Laurence Manning was up 29-18 over Robert E. Lee at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Manning had three scorers in double figures. Phillip Henry scored 16 points, Jamal Keels had 13 points, and Jerrell Frierson scored 12 points. Dontravious Witherspoon dropped in six points. Daniel Pendergrass added five points. Cameron Darley had four points. Breshaun Pendergrass, Ro’Char Witherspoon, Jaylen Hamilton and Jire’ Brunson had two points each.

The Eagles and Silver Foxes were all tied at 13 after one quarter. Going into the half, the Eagles had pulled ahead, 29-24. The third quarter was all the Silver Foxes, outscoring the Eagles by nine. Scott’s Branch outscored Lamar in the fourth quarter, 11-6, but it was too little too late.

LMA was up 21-20 at the half, but a low scoring third quarter switched the momentum Wilson Hall’s way.

“We only scored three points in the entire third quarter,” LMA Girls Coach Mike Lowder said the day after the game. “We kept the game close. With four minutes left, it was still a two possession game, but we had to foul the ball handler and she made nine free throws down the stretch.”

Manning had three scorers in double figures. Lanisha Brown had a double-double scoring 16 points with 11 rebounds. Brown also had one steal and one blocked shot. Shanequa Muldrow scored 16 points with two steals and three assists. Karen White also had a double-double scoring 14 points with 14 rebounds. Monica Nelson scored three points. Petra York had two points and Chelsey Cousar scored one point.

Scott’s Branch was down by one at half and lead by one at the end of the third quarter, but Timmonsville came back strong in the fourth quarter outscoring the Eagles by 26-14 to take the win.

SBHS started out strong and ended strong against GSM with 10 points in the first quarter, 13 points in the second quarter, 20 points in the third quarter and finishing with 13 points in the fourth period.

Ten Eagles got into the scoring column for SBHS.

The daughter of Thurman and Essie Claire Coker of Cades, Cathy Coker, now married with the last name Batten, left records in the wake of her playing days at Salem Academy and Baptist College.

The ballots are in for second class of the Clarendon County Athletic Hall of Fame.

 

Eleven athletes with roots in Clarendon County have been selected.

 

They are Cathy Coker Batten, Brian Beatson, J.C. Britton, Homer Coker, Ned Darley III, Doll Eadon, the late Althea Gibson, Mike Mahoney, Bobby Matthews, Gunter Sweat and Joey Taylor.

 

The ballots are in for second class of the Clarendon County Athletic Hall of Fame.

The trip to the finals in the District 9 Officials 14th Annual Christmas Basketball Tournament on Dec. 30, wasn’t easy for the Lady Monarchs.

The Lady Monarchs defeated the Lady Gators in Game 2 of the tournament on Dec. 28, 48-44.

The score might not be etched in stone, but one thing is certain. The Lady Monarchs and Lady Gators know what to expect when they meet for the fifth time this season in the second game of the District 9 Officials Christmas Tournament at 1:45 p.m. Dec. 28 at John F. Thames gymnasium.

Manning’s Lady Monarchs have fared well against Lakewood’s Lady Gators by winning three of their four previous meetings; however the games weren’t decided until the fourth quarter.

The Lady Monarchs took advantage of facing the Lady Gators for the second time in the Monarch Classic by trouncing the Sumter team, 60-45, in Thursday night’s championship game.

Lady Monarch Alexia Abraham, was named Most Valuable Player.

“They played excellent defense,” Coach John F. Thames said after the game. “Their offense was really good also.”

Thames said his team took advantage of the Lady Gators’ foul trouble.

From the beginning buzzer, the Manning-Lee Central game was hard fought down to the wire with Manning pulling away in the last few minutes to win, 76-66, to claim first place in the Monarch Classic.

With Manning Head Coach Jabari Deas sitting in the hallway outside the game due to two technical fouls in a prior game Thursday, Assistant Coach Stevie Ward led the Monarchs to victory.

“The players played for the coach,” Ward said after the game. “They put their hearts into it.”

East Clarendon High School Varsity girls are 1-6 after three weeks of season play.

On Dec. 6, they notched their first victory of the season, in a close matchup at home against Johnsonville.

Leading scorers were Ty’Quasha Kennedy with nine points, D’onna McFadden with eight points, and Latisha Wells with six points. Shameka Jackson had four points, Mica McFadden and Alexus Watford had three each, and Kelsey Shaw had two points.

Scott’s Branch High School Girls are 0-6 after three weeks of season play.

Head Coach Ruth Coard said that she has a very young team, with only two returning players, both seniors, Deasia Brown, and Jasmine Murray. Coard said that the 1-A Lady Eagles have faced some tough competition in schools that are all in the 2-A division, including Lakewood, Manning and Crestwood.

They lost at Lakewood in their season opener on Nov. 29.
