Five of the six candidates for the S.C. House District 64 seat were the guests of the Turbeville Ruritan Club Thursday night.

 

The forum, held at East Clarendon High School, was open to the public.

 

Only Democratic candidate Alvin Green was absent. Green ran last November for the U.S. Senate Seat against incumbent and winner, Sen. Jim DeMint.

Six candidates, four Democrats and two Republicans, have filed for the vacant South Carolina District 64 seat. The seat became vacant following the death of Cathy Harvin. The primary election will be held on Feb. 15.

The Democratic candidates are Alvin Greene, Kevin Johnson, Dwight Stewart and Bernard Richburg.

The Republican candidates are Derry Beard and Walter “Sonny” Sanders.

The Santee-Lynches Regional Council of Governments is encouraging those who have not been mailed a form or had a census-taker stop by their house, to call the toll-free number to be counted. The 2010 Census Help Line operates between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. any day of the week through Friday, July 30, 2010. The number to call is 1-866-872-6868.

Following a disastrous first go at an animal control ordinance last October, Clarendon County Council elected to scrap the original plan and convene an advisory committee to help set the tone and direction of a new plan.

Following a disastrous first go at an animal control ordinance last October, Clarendon County Council elected to scrap the original plan and convene an advisory committee to help set the tone and direction of a new plan.

Representatives of the Animal Shelter and its volunteers, as well as members of the hunting community, met on March 31 to review and rework the ordinance.

“The overall intent of the original ordinance stayed the same,” said County Attorney David Epperson, who oversaw the work of the advisory committee.

A native of Pinewood, McLeod graduated from Wilson Hall School and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of South Carolina in 2002.

Silver native Robert McFadden has always had a strong desire to serve his community.

“As a child, my dream was to get my education, go to law school and then return to my community and be of service,” McFadden said.

To that end, McFadden has filed to run in the Democratic primary against three-term Councilman Billy Richardson.

The group portrait of the Summerton Town Council will have to be re-shot following the April 6 municipal election.

Four candidates stood for the three seats up for election.
On the ballot were incumbents Mayor Pro Tem Ken Wells, Councilman DuValle Elliott and Councilman Henry Lawson.
Joining them was political newcomer Terrance Tindal.

When the 224 electronically cast ballots were tallied, Elliott had received 131 votes, Wells garnered 129 votes, Tindal earned 119 and Lawson came in with 88 votes.

In the June 8 primary, he will face opposition from political newcomer Robert McFadden.

Richardson is a lifelong resident of Clarendon County and a 1973 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. He is the owner and operator of the River Road Convenience Mart near Rimini. He is a member of the Greater St. Philips RUME Church where he serves as chairman of the Trustees’ Board.

Political newcomer Terrance Tindal has thrown his hat in the ring for one of three Summerton Town Council seats up for re-election.

Political newcomer Terrance Tindal has thrown his hat in the ring for one of three Summerton Town Council seats up for re-election.

Tindal joins incumbents Mayor Pro Tem Ken Wells, DuValle Elliott and Henry Lawson in the four-man race for the three seats.

Should the incumbents be victorious they would be seated for their third, second and fourth terms, respectively (Wells, Elliott and Lawson). All members of the Summerton Town Council are elected as at-large representatives.

Second reading was held on a budget amendment ordinance.

Friday night, many were present to enjoy the March Cypress After Five event with performers Kim Harrison and Glenn Strange. We are so fortunate to have the opportunity to experience top notch entertainment without having to leave the community.

Educators met with Legislators this week to voice their concern that “enough is enough” when it comes to further reductions in funding public education in South Carolina. Clarendon District 1 Superintendent Dr. Rose Wilder, Board Chair John Bonaparte and Board Secretary Gussie Cochrane were a part of the group.
