Two Manning landmarks have received awards from the Municipal Association of South Carolina.

The new Manning City Hall, located at 29 West Boyce Street and the Johnson Law Firm/Moses Levi Building, located at 2 North Brooks Street, were recipients of awards from the MASC’s 2010 Municipal Achievement Awards and Main Street S.C. Inspiration Awards.

Manning’s City Hall was the recipient of the 2009 Main Street Outstanding Public-Private Partnership Award.

Mary Julia “Judy” Brewer, 70, passed away on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Mary Julia “Judy” Brewer, 70, passed away on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born June 25, 1940, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late John Beniard and Eula Baggette Brewer. She was a retired family court stenographer, having worked for Judge James M. “Mac” Morris, Judge Wright Turbeville and Judge Sep Belser. She was a member of Liberty Free Will Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and served as church pianist.

SUMTER -- A low car count combined with sweltering heat made for a slow night of racing at Sumter Speedway Saturday. With the exception of Bomber Four and Young Guns, the races involved three or less cars with one race flagged early as only one car was running at the finish.

Three-years ago Lindsey Lyles, 17, became the first player from Manning High School to win a state championship in tennis. She became the number one-seeded player at the school in seventh-grade. Right from the start Lyles had what it took to be a champ, according to William B. Harvin, who she first picked up the racket with at age 10. Harvin, who has been playing and coaching tennis for 50 years, said that he saw something special in her right from the start.

U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene made his first public appearance with a seven-minute speech at the NAACP’s local chapter meeting held at Manning Junior High School Sunday.

U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene made his first public appearance with a seven-minute speech at the NAACP’s local chapter meeting held at Manning Junior High School Sunday.

In front of a crowd of about 550 and dozens of media, from local to international, Greene talked about the issues that are the basis of his campaign-jobs, education, and justice. He added in humor to all the media attention.

Cheryl Cherice Adams Malone was born Oct. 15, 1972, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was raised by the late Junious and Carrie Green; was the biological daughter of Jerry Adams and the late Stephanie Malone; and was the adoptive daughter of the late Willette White. She died on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.

Look out Texas, here comes Turbeville! Those words or some very similar are probably on the lips of the Turbeville Dixie Darlings softball team, coaches and proud parents as the newly crowned state champions prepare to visit the Lone Star state later this month.

Look out Texas, here comes Turbeville! Those words or some very similar are probably on the lips of the Turbeville Dixie Darlings softball team, coaches and proud parents as the newly crowned state champions prepare to visit the Lone Star state later this month.

Thursday evening the troops from Turbeville earned the right to represent the Palmetto State in the Dixie Darlings World Series by defeating Union 20-16 in the finals of the state tournament held in Dentsville.

There’s a new hunting law that South Carolina deer hunters using dogs need to be aware of called the Renegade Hunter Act.  According to Charles Ruth, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) Deer and Turkey Project Supervisor, the new Act actually strengthens the already-on-the-books Road Hunting law. The way the law is worded, it does apply directly to hunters using dogs to hunt deer.

A half a dozen puppies run to Bailey Connor as she opens the gate to their pen and crouches down to pet them. Bailey, 14, volunteers at the animal shelter at least three days a week.

“I just love being around all the dogs, it brings a smile to my face,” she said.

The Second Chance Animal Shelter (formerly known as Clarendon County Animal Shelter) prides itself on being a no-kill place for dogs and cats. Since opening in the January 2007, the shelter has been called home by more than a hundred of these animals.

She was educated in Clarendon County Schools, and was a life member of Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church, Pinewood.

She was preceded in death by 10 siblings and three children, Pernell Briggs Sr., Ruby M. Osbie and James L. Briggs Sr.

Manning High School has been a dominant FFA force for at least two decades. The school’s organization has the largest chapter in the state and has won gold, silver and bronze, while representing South Carolina numerous times on a national level. The FFA is a dynamic youth organization that is a part of agricultural education programs at middle and high schools throughout the US.

Investigators with the Manning Police Department seek the community’s assistance in identifying a suspect in the June 28 attack of former Clerk to the County Council and Administrative Assistant Betty Pritchard.

Friends and Family of Betty Pritchard have offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible for Pritchard’s attack.

Some time between midnight and 5 a.m. on June 28, Pritchard was brutally attacked by a man she has described as being of medium build, height and skin tone.

Born March 24, 1927, in Marion, she was a daughter of the late Rembert Collins and the late Eva Mae Collins Collins. She was a retired inspector for Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel Division in Columbia. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Columbia, and attended Good Shepherd Baptist Church and New Covenant Presbyterian Church, both of Manning.
