Mrs. Susan Richardson Briggs, 98, widow of George Briggs, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, in the Clarendon Memorial Hospital. She was born in Clarendon County, March 14, 1912, to the late Henry Richardson Sr. and Susan Junior Richardson.

She was educated in Clarendon County Schools, and was a life member of Greater St. Phillip RMUE Church, Pinewood.

She was preceded in death by 10 siblings and three children, Pernell Briggs Sr., Ruby M. Osbie and James L. Briggs Sr.

SUMTER – William Randle Gulledge, 60, husband of Sharon Turner Gulledge, died Monday, July 19, 2010, at Tuomey Healthcare System in Sumter.

Annie Maria Lowder Coonce, 86, widow of Chester “Chet” Matthew Coonce, died Thursday, July 15, 2010, at her home in the Home Branch community of Clarendon County.

Diana Beck Kerlin, wife of David Scott Kerlin, passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at her home.

Edna Grace Hardin Pyritz, 83, widow of Kenneth Pyritz, first married to the late Hoke F. Hardin,  died Sunday, July 11, 2010, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.

Born March 24, 1927, in Marion, she was a daughter of the late Rembert Collins and the late Eva Mae Collins Collins. She was a retired inspector for Westinghouse Nuclear Fuel Division in Columbia. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Columbia, and attended Good Shepherd Baptist Church and New Covenant Presbyterian Church, both of Manning.

Jones grew up chasing fire trucks. Like many young boys he wanted to ride the big truck and put out those large fires. Unlike many, he actually followed that road and dug that path smooth, becoming one of the most successful and well-respected firefighters in the state.

Most people don’t have buildings named after them. Carter H. Jones is an exception. A whole fire station bears his letters.

On June 12, Jones became the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association’s highest honor.

Catherine “Ren” Calhoun Hilton died on Saturday, July 3, 2010, at her residence in Manning.

Born April 11, 1959, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Mason and Julia Johnson Calhoun. Catherine was a graduate of Manning High School and F.E. Dubose Career Center. She was a member of St. John Baptist Church, Bloomville community. She was employed with the Clarendon County Disabilities & Special Needs Board for a number of years, until a decline in health.

Marjorie Salmon Watts Gackstatter, 90, widow of John Gackstatter, passed away July 3, 2010, at the Lake Marion Nursing Home in Summerton.

Born September 16, 1919, in Brewster, NY, she was the daughter of the late Adalbert Salmon and Estella May Everett Salmon.

SALTERS - Lottie Mae Patrick, 86, widow of Charlie Patrick, of 28 Old 52 Highway, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at McLeod Hospice House, Florence.

Born Aug. 3, 1923, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Addline Brown Wilson.

Funeral plans will be announced by Community Funeral Home of Sumter.

Alvilder Singletary “Biddie” Robinson, 88, widow of Harold Richard Robinson, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 11, 1921, in the Sandy Ridge community of Berkeley County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence E. and Flora Lee Myers Singletary. She was a member of Summerton United Methodist Church.
