A half a dozen puppies run to Bailey Connor as she opens the gate to their pen and crouches down to pet them. Bailey, 14, volunteers at the animal shelter at least three days a week.

“I just love being around all the dogs, it brings a smile to my face,” she said.

The Second Chance Animal Shelter (formerly known as Clarendon County Animal Shelter) prides itself on being a no-kill place for dogs and cats. Since opening in the January 2007, the shelter has been called home by more than a hundred of these animals.

Hands Outstretched to People Everywhere is what H.O.P.E. stands for. Debbie Bishop, a member of the Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu came up with the catchy name.

“We were on our church’s couples retreat talking about creating an outreach program locally, and this is the name that came to mind,” Bishop said. “This is something that we want to do to help all people who need assistance in our community.”

Every historical piece eventually needs restoration and preservation… including the place that holds these artifacts. The Clarendon County Archives and History Center has existed for nearly two decades in a building that is more than one-hundred-years-old.

Every historical piece eventually needs restoration and preservation… including the place that holds these artifacts. The Clarendon County Archives and History Center has existed for nearly two decades in a building that is more than one-hundred-years-old.

Built in 1909, the structure served as a public library to the citizens of Clarendon County for nearly 70 years. It was owned by the Manning Civic League and in 1976 was deeded to Clarendon County. The building officially became an archive in October 1996.

An evacuation bus carrying families back to their homes on the coast collided with a large truck in Manning on Thursday, June 17.

There were 20 people on board.

Luckily this was just a drill.

The exercise was a collaborative effort by members of the Clarendon County Emergency Operations Center (EOC), Clarendon County EMS and Clarendon Health System. County and city fire departments and law enforcement were also involved in the statewide disaster exercise.

ELLOREE - Robert Lee Kocher Sr., 76, died Sunday, June 13, 2010, at his residence in Elloree.

Born March 22, 1934, in Terra Haute, Ind., he was the son of the late Bernard and Lola Taylor Kocher. He was a retired graphic artist, and an author. He has written poetry, screenplays and fictional writings.

Friday night I was off to the far reaches of East Clarendon County. The Turbeville Community Association and Cheryl Wingard hosted the kick off for a major fund raising initiative scheduled for August.

The art scene in Clarendon County has emerged strongly over the last few years. Much credit is due to the Water Lily Gallery founded four years ago, which displays the works of 20-25 local artists.

The art scene in Clarendon County has emerged strongly over the last few years. Much credit is due to the Water Lily Gallery founded four years ago, which displays the works of 20-25 local artists.

Gene Phillips of Summerton Drugs provided the space, and the Lake Marion Artist Guild, founded by Anne and Jim Darby, set up the gallery.

Although she does not work with a brush herself, Darby appreciates what art has to offer.

“Art raises the quality of life in many areas,” she said.
