Some of the better news around lakes Marion and Moultrie the past week or two have been an increase in the number of keeper-sized stripers being caught by fishermen. In addition, the catfish action has continued to improve, especially with the blue catfish in this cooler weather and dropping water temperature situation. The crappie action is still good but will likely slow soon.

Typically, the action on crappie will slow down during the really cold months of January and February, but right now there’s still some very good crappie fishing on both lakes Marion and Moultrie. With the cooler weather and dropping water temperatures, the action is slowing a bit in terms of big numbers of fish but some slab crappie are being caught in good numbers. The time is now if you want to get in on the good fishing before the water temps drop to where the action slows down considerably.

The fishing news from around lakes Marion and Moultrie is very good, and both largemouth bass and crappie action is very good. Bass guide Inky Davis has been catching a lot of largemouth, and the crappie fishing has been very good on both lakes. The crappie action may only linger for a few more weeks, so now is the time to get a cooler full of papermouths. In addition, the catfish action has been very good, and the striper catching is also good. But the number of legal-sized striper continues to be a problem for most fishermen.

The fishing news from around lakes Marion and Moultrie has certainly improved and right now, a lot of crappie, catfish, bass and striper are being caught.

From what I’ve seen I wish all my friends would fish like a girl. There’s energy, excitement and most importantly, passion when young girls are fishing. I’m fortunate to have some granddaughters that really enjoy the outdoors. One of them, my granddaughter Meagan Daugherty, was recently wearing a shirt that simply read “Fish Like a Girl.” It’s the best logo on a shirt I’ve seen in a while.

My appreciation of the outdoors is not dictated by a date on a calendar. I prefer real world impacts. The much cooler weather recently has rejuvenated my senses and I can finally enjoy fall weather. I know fall officially arrived on the calendar long ago, I just didn’t personally accept or actually notice it. The arrival of fall is an event, not a specific date on a calendar. Stepping outside in the much cooler weather last week significantly enhanced my outdoor spirits.

The primary thing we needed to really turn on some good fishing was a bit of cooler weather, and we got it. Fishing has been very good, especially for largemouth bass and crappie. But look for the largemouth, striper, crappie and catfish action to get really good in November.

If you’ve thought seriously about some serious schooling, now is an excellent time. Believe it or not, it’s a great way to get your mind off what’s bothering you and relax. Those who know me know I’m not talking about school as in textbooks and homework, but as in schooling fish on our area lakes.

The wind from Hurricane Sandy that passed by the South Carolina coast last weekend certainly played havoc on the fishermen this past weekend, as well as deer hunters. There are several fish species that were/are biting, but it was very difficult to get on the lake and fish consistent patterns, especially the open water areas. The best bet for many was largemouth bass fishing where anglers could get into secluded coves and pockets to find fish. But the open water fishing for stripers catfish and crappie definitely suffered.
