Clarendon Sports Hall of Fame

Baseball was THE sport at the Mahoney home.

“At a pretty early age, I was playing catch with my dad,” said Michael P. Mahoney, a 2012 inductee into the Clarendon County Athletic Hall of Fame. “My dad loved the game and it was easy to see his passion for the game rubbed off on me.”

Althea Gibson was born on Aug. 25, 1927, in the small rural community of Silver. Her parents, Annie Bell and Daniel Gibson, and their “8-pound and long” baby girl lived in a four-room cabin that the Gibsons shared with his parents and six of their children.

Leila Oliver “Doll” Eadon grew up with a basketball in her hands.

From the time she could walk, Eadon was dribbling and shooting a basketball with her older siblings, sisters Ceci and Marion, and brother, Jules.

It takes a special type of athlete to be a pitcher.

All the eyes in the stands are on you as you’re standing on the mound, gripping a baseball in your hand and looking back at the batter.

Fastball, slider, curve ball, sinker … inside, outside, over the plate … It’s down to using your best pitch at this time particular time in the game.

Not every young man who grew up near Puddin’ Swamp playing baseball in his aunt’s pasture can say they played in a College World Series game against a future President of the United States with another future President in the stands asleep in his mother’s arms.

One man’s love for baseball resurrected an American Legion Baseball program that had been idle for 16 years.

That man is James Clinton Britton Jr., perhaps better known as “J.C.”

Brian Beatson could never sit still.

As a 4-year-old, Beatson grabbed a bat and was hitting baseballs off a T. From then on, his love of sports grew.

One thing is certain – Cathy Coker Batten loved basketball.

Batten wasn’t a pushover in academics, but she was a super achiever at basketball.

The ballots are in for second class of the Clarendon County Athletic Hall of Fame.
