The Lady Monarchs opened 2012 with a big win Jan. 3, over cross county rival, the Lady Wolverines, 44-22.

The Monarchs won a close game Jan. 3, at John Franklin Thames Gymnasium against cross county rival Wolverines, 55-50.

 

The trip to the finals in the District 9 Officials 14th Annual Christmas Basketball Tournament on Dec. 30, wasn’t easy for the Lady Monarchs.

 

Never let it be said that people in Manning and Clarendon County can’t keep a secret.

 

While dozens knew that a special ceremony was planned for South Carolina’s winningest active women’s basketball coach, the coach didn’t have a clue, or maybe just one, prior to the ceremony.

 

The score might not be etched in stone, but one thing is certain. The Lady Monarchs and Lady Gators know what to expect when they meet for the fifth time this season in the second game of the District 9 Officials Christmas Tournament at 1:45 p.m. Dec. 28 at John F. Thames gymnasium.

 

The Lady Monarchs took advantage of facing the Lady Gators for the second time in the Monarch Classic by trouncing the Sumter team, 60-45, in Thursday night’s championship game.

 

From the beginning buzzer, the Manning-Lee Central game was hard fought down to the wire with Manning pulling away in the last few minutes to win, 76-66, to claim first place in the Monarch Classic.

 

Coach John F. Thames became the winningest active women’s basketball coach in South Carolina history in the gym that bears his name when his Lady Monarchs soundly defeated the Wilson Lady Tigers, 74-57, Wednesday night.
