It was with deepest regret that I was unable to attend the program that was held last week to honor the retirement of John Land from the S.C. Senate. I would have loved to have been there.

We all just celebrated Thanksgiving. It is a time when we gather with friends and family and we eat … eat … and then eat some more. The planning for the epic meal starts months in advance. The spread of food is from one end of the table to the other. We see delightful foods such as turkey, ham, dressing, giblet gravy, cranberries, macaroni and cheese, green bean casserole, sweet potato pie, and pumpkin pie. Are your mouths watering yet?

We have just endured one of the most uncomfortable election seasons I have ever experienced. And I like politics. This year, not so much.

Fifth Disease (also called erythema infectiosum) is a viral illness that is especially common in kids. It usually gives the appearance of a “slapped cheek” due to the distinctive red rash on the face. A number of cases of Fifth Disease have been seen in our community recently and you may have noticed some children with prominent red cheeks out and about participating in their normal activities, often having just recovered from a low-grade fever, headache and mild cold symptoms.

While this article may sound more like a type of food than a Medicare reference, the term “donut hole” actually refers to a gap in prescription drug coverage under Medicare’s Part D plan.

I’m sure you have seen the coverage of Jennifer Livingston, the Wisconsin broadcaster who received an email claiming she should not be on television because she was overweight. While the person sending the email I’m sure was well intentioned, their remarks were nonetheless hurtful.

Last week was Banned Book Week and even though I am a little late on the draw, the freedom to read is something so very important to me that I had to go ahead and write about it anyway.

Like most Americans, if not people in all societies, parents in South Carolina want the best opportunities for their children to live healthy and productive lives. Parents know their communities and the world can be cruel and dangerous places for children. They worry from pregnancy to adulthood about their children’s personal safety, whether they are physically and mentally healthy, ready and able to make their way through schooling to jobs or careers that are rewarding.

Running around the community to football games, church functions, council meetings, school board meetings and charity events gives you a somewhat clear view of the fabric we call our home. It also affords an opportunity to meet and observe those who do the work and are in the trenches representing the parts that make the whole.

Sometimes there is just so much going on in my head that the only solution is to put it down on paper or computer screen. Welcome to “Brain in a Blender” theater. There are about 4,000 screens all showing something different.
