  • Obesity rates in Clarendon School District 2 have decreased by three percent in the last several years, thanks largely in part to the efforts of Food Services Director, Mary E. Graham. 

  • Three-years ago Lindsey Lyles, 17, became the first player from Manning High School to win a state championship in tennis. She became the number one-seeded player at the school in seventh-grade. Right from the start Lyles had what it took to be a champ, according to William B. Harvin, who she first picked up the racket with at age 10. Harvin, who has been playing and coaching tennis for 50 years, said that he saw something special in her right from the start.

  • Victor McCoy Weldon, 23, of 470 Pioneer Road of Sumter was arrested last week for the attack on Manning resident Edward “Slick” Gibbons on May 15. He is being charged with burglary of first degree, assault and battery with intent to kill, kidnapping, grand larceny, armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

  • Most 15-year-olds wouldn’t risk going to a foreign country with a different culture, language and a totally different way of life. Not Maggie Ridgeway, she decided to take a two-week missionary trip to the country of Togo, in West Africa.

  • You don’t have to paint on canvas to be an artist. Take Wade Edwards for example, who has created masterpieces on the most unlikely surface, driftwood. He has been painting on driftwood for the last 20 years. 

  • U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene made his first public appearance with a seven-minute speech at the NAACP’s local chapter meeting held at Manning Junior High School Sunday.

  • A half a dozen puppies run to Bailey Connor as she opens the gate to their pen and crouches down to pet them. Bailey, 14, volunteers at the animal shelter at least three days a week.

  • As the 2010 Census is coming to a close, there are residences that still remain uncounted. 

  • Manning High School has been a dominant FFA force for at least two decades. The school’s organization has the largest chapter in the state and has won gold, silver and bronze, while representing South Carolina numerous times on a national level. The FFA is a dynamic youth organization that is a part of agricultural education programs at middle and high schools throughout the US.

  • The Christian Prayer Riders and Smokehouse Restaurant in Turbeville will be hosting a benefit ride for B.J. Wilkes this Saturday, July 17. Wilkes was born with only one pumping chamber in his heart. Doctors told his parents that they would have to operate once he got older.
