The Turbeville Dixie Debs representing South Carolina took fifth place at the 2012 Dixie Debs World Series held Aug. 3-8 in Powhatan, Va.
South Carolina won game one on Aug. 4 defeating Texas, 9-7.
Carsten Walker and Hannah Blakley were the pitchers for the game. Head Coach Greg Browder said that the team did not play well but were able to fight back and win their first game of the series. South Carolina was down 7-6 going in the top of the seventh but was able to come back and tie the game, 7-7.
South Carolina scored two in the top of the ninth to get the win, 9-7.
South Carolina lost game two on Aug. 5 to Virginia, 10-5.
South Carolina scored four in the first and Virginia scored 10 in the second. South Carolina scored one in the fourth.
Walker, Kaitlin Alexander and Leslie Altman were pitchers for that game.
South Carolina won game three on the evening of Aug. 5 defeating the host team Powhatan, 17-3.
South Carolina scored 10 in the first, two in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth. Powhatan had one in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth.
Pitchers were Blakley, Alexander and Whit-Lee Barrett.
South Carolina lost game four on Aug. 6 to Louisiana, 1-0.
Louisiana scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to get the win.
Blakley pitched all eight innings.
Head Coach Greg Browder said that his team played good defense, even though they got the loss.
“We just couldn’t score or get anything going as we wanted to,” he said.
Browder said that overall his team had a great season. The South Carolina Debs repeated as state champs and took fifth in the World Series for the second year.
“You don’t always win everything, the important thing was for them to enjoy themselves and work as a team,” he said.
Browder said that many of the players expressed interest in coming back next year.
