The season is not over for Scott’s Branch High School, a 3-7 team, that defeated the favored 7-3 Whale Branch High School team in the first round of Class A Division II playoffs in Beaufort.
“We ran the ball well, blocked well and executed well tonight,” said SBHS Head Coach Leonard Johnson. “When we do those things, we come up with results.”
The Eagles got an interception and a couple of turnovers and was able to take the lead late in the fourth.
Leon Mathis had six touchdowns, and Johnson said the offensive line played outstanding to support him. He stressed the emphasis of team in their victory.
“Our best player is only as good as our offensive line,” he said.
Whale Branch led at the end of the first quarter 8-6. Mathis scored one touchdown on 3-yard run with 6:04 remaining. In the second with 9:31 remaining, Mathis scored on a 13-yard run, with TE/DE Robert Felder getting the 2-point conversion. In the third Mathis scored two touchdowns, and a two-conversion. At the end of the third, the score was tied 28-28.
The fourth quarter was an action-packed one for the Eagles. Felder scored on 50-yard interception with 10:11 to go, and Mathis got the 2-point conversion. Mathis scored on a 24-yard run with 8:48 to go, and got the 2-point conversion. Mathis scored on a 48-yard run with 7:27 to go, and Trey’shawn Jones got the 2-point conversion. Rayquan Georgia scored on a five-yard run with 2:13 left in the game, and Jones got the 2-point conversion.
Top defensive players for the game were B.J. McDaniel with three tackles, two assists and one sack. Felder had two tackles, one assist and one interception, and Shaaim Smith had four tackles and two assists.
Scott’s Branch will travel to Timmonsville in the next round on Friday, Nov. 11.
