Rev. Sylvester Hicks

Rev. Sylvester Hicks, 90, widower of Mary Taylor B. Hicks, died Sunday, June 24, 2012, at his residence in Manning. He was born Feb. 4, 1922, in the Sugar Hill section of Manning. He’s the son of the late Allen Hicks Sr. and Lucille B. Hicks.

He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He furthered his education in plumbing and real estate. He also attended college to receive credentials as C.N.A.

In his youth, he joined Holly Hill Baptist Church in the Bloomville Section. He migrated to Brooklyn, N.Y. and joined Galilee Baptist Church and worked in many ministries. After moving back to Manning, he joined Fellowship Baptist Church where he became an ordained minister, served on the men’s auxiliary, Wednesday night bible study and Friday night prayer group.

He was employed for many years at Wateree Community Actions, Inc.

Survivors are four daughters, Vera Holland, Vestine Hicks, Kathryn Bynoe and Tracey (Thomas) Ragin; step-children Brenda, and the late Wiley and Michael Baldwin; reared in the home, La-Verne Pendergrass, Yolanda “Nolie” Forbes, Brendan O’Neal, Sidni and Sierra Forbes; one sister, Susan Hicks Dunbar; three brothers, Levan (Geneivieve) Hicks, George Hicks Sr. and Isaiah (Hattie) Hicks and two sisters-in-law, Sylvia Hicks and Earlene Hicks; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. with services beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2012, at Fellowship Baptist Church, Manning.

Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.
