Queen Ester Miller Young, 75, widow of Booker T. Young Sr., died Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.
She was born March 29, 1935, in the Camp Bob Cooper section of Clarendon County, a daughter of the late Temple and Vinnie Mack Miller.
She received her education at Mount Chapel School and was a graduate of Manning Training School. In her youth, she accepted Christ and joined Mount Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. She later joined Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as president of the junior and gospel choirs, superintendent of the Sunday school, a member of YWCA Lodge No. 2, South Jordan River Union, Pride of Foreston Order of Eastern Star No. 131 and a member of the executive board of the Manning Branch of NAACP.
Survivors are her children, Robert Lee (Brenda) Young Sr. of Sumter, Harold (Iris) Young, Tracy Elaine Young and Booker T. Young Jr., all of Manning, Teretha (Richard) Bennett of Brooklyn, N.Y., JoAnn Amweya of Norfolk, Va., and Melvin (Shari) Young of Batesville, Ark.; six brothers, Temple (Shirley) Miller of Hampton, Va., the Rev. Sam (Elizabeth) Miller of Sumter, the Rev. Jonah (Ruth) Miller of Irvington, N.J., Abraham (Ruth) Miller of Columbia, the Rev. Arnett (Mary) Miller of Hampton and Aquilla (Shirley) Miller of Denmark; one sister, Nellie Miller of Aiea Honolulu, Hawaii; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, 14362 Raccoon Road, Manning.
Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of the arrangements.
