The American Legion, Department of South Carolina, will sponsor Palmetto Boys’ State 2010 at the University of South Carolina in Columbia during the week of June 13-19, according to George E. Callaway, Education/Youth Activities Chairman of the local Williams-Burgess Post #68 in Manning. Hoyt Collins is Post Commander.
“Palmetto Boys’ State is one of the premier youth leadership seminars in the nation,” Callaway said. “Under the sponsorship of the local Post, six rising Senior award-winning Honor students from Manning area public and private high schools will attend the week-long governmental leadership seminar.”
Named as delegates from Manning High School are:
• Mills B. F. Adams, son of Eppie Mills Adams of Manning and Boyd F. Adams of Hamlet, N.C. He is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Future Farmers of America, and National Youth Leadership Forum on Law and C.S.I. His athletic endeavors include varsity baseball and football, as well as American Legion Baseball. Mills’ volunteerism involves assisting the elderly with yard work. He is a member of Manning Presbyterian Church and active in several area church youth groups.
• James Clifford Bagnal is the son of Cliff and Stacey Bagnal. A very active member of the Future Farmers of America, “J.C.” assists with their greenhouse horticulture project. His athletic endeavors include soccer and baseball. He volunteers with several community service activities of the FFA and MHS, while also managing his own entrepreneurial J. C. Lawn Service. He is a member of Union United Methodist Church and a Salkehatchie Summer Service participant.
• Charles Tyler Hale, son of Ms. Kay Williamson Hale, is in Air Force Junior ROTC, Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Duke TIP Program. He has been named to the National Society of High School Scholars, Upstate Junior Scholar and Francis Marion Junior Scholar. Tyler also was a People to People Student Ambassador to Europe. An active member of Manning First Baptist Church, he participates with its Youth Group service projects and the Drama Team.
Alternates from Manning High School are:
• Scott Owen Carlson, son of David and Wanda Carlson, is a member of the MHS Band, FCA, and Junior Class Prom Committee. He is a winner of District and State Male Vocal Solo honors, as well as band competition excellent ratings. Scott has achieved the Good Citizenship Award. His volunteerism includes Free Will Baptist Children’s Home fund-raisers and other community service projects. He attends Liberty Free Will Baptist Church, is a Sunday School teacher, and a member of the Church choir.
• Yancey Orlando Pacheco-Garcia is the son of Jose Pacheco. He is a member of Air Force Junior ROTC, its Color Guard and Drill teams. He holds the rank of Flight Sergeant. His numerous ROTC wards include Drill Team Competition Ribbons, Service Ribbons, Dress and Appearance Ribbons, and Good Conduct Ribbons. Yancey volunteers with the Adopt-a-Highway clean-up project.
• Joseph Michael Wynne, son of Tami and Michael Wynne, is a member of FFA and FCA, and a recipient of the Good Citizenship Award. His athletic activities include soccer (team captain), baseball and basketball. Even with a part-time job, Joey participates in school and community service projects including Relay-for-Life, visiting shut-ins/sick, and other mission endeavors. An active member of Home Branch Baptist Church and its Youth Group, he assists with the sound system, teaches children’s church and attends camps and retreats.
• David Joseph Glaser is the son of Tammy and Steve Glaser. As a member of the marching band and jazz band ensemble, he is a winner of award medals for solo and ensemble. Athletically, he has participated in soccer (trophies), baseball, track and 5K (running medals). David volunteers with Meals on Wheels, Manning Methodist Church community housing rehab projects and fund-raisers, and youth group activities.
The following were selected as delegates from Laurence Manning Academy:
• Andrew Christian Allday, is the son of Gregory and Marian Allday. He is a school History Day Winner and a member of the varsity golf team. Andrew is an active member of Manning First Baptist Church, its youth group and youth choir and several mission trips, including World Changers housing rehab. He volunteers with sound and lighting for church musicals, dramas and pageant productions.
• Kerry L. Gibbons is the son of Lisa L. Gibbons and the late Ed Gibbons. He is a member of the pep club and has received academic excellence awards in athletics and academics. Athletically, Kerry has participated in track and football. He volunteers with Relay-for-Life. He attends Manning Second Baptist Church and its youth activities.
• Robert W. Lee is the son of David and Brenda Lee. His athletic participation includes varsity football and the golf team. Bobby is a member of the Manning United Methodist Church and its youth group activities. He is involved in school and community volunteerism.
Named as alternates from LMA:
• Victor Dale DuBose, son of Julie and Wade DuBose, is a Student Council Representative, Chaplain, and a member of the Arts Magazine staff (music and photography). He has participated in basketball and soccer. Dale is a volunteer for Relay-for-Life, Alzheimer’s Walk, and B D Heart Walk. He attends Emmanuel Baptist Church, its youth group, and also leads the Praise music.
• Adam Lee Wells is the son of Jerry and Lee Wells. He is a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Beta Club. He has participated in J. V. football and the soccer team. Adam attends Home Branch Baptist Church and is a member of its youth group.
“Boys’ State will be highlighted by several government speakers. During the week-long activities, leaders and mentors from the public and private sector will also participate. Along with learning about the political process, the student delegates will actually experience it as they campaign for various offices and hold mock legislative sessions at the State House in Columbia,” Callaway said. He expressed appreciation to the local businesses and civic organizations which contributed to the financial backing of the Manning School District #2 delegation: The Bank of Clarendon, First Palmetto Savings Bank, Stokes-Craven Ford/Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge, Santee Leasing, Inc., Manning Lions’ Club and Manning Rotary Club.
