Sharron Haley/Clarendon Citizen - Dr. Nadia Carey, far right, has joined the pediatric practice at Black River Healthcare in Manning. Dr. Beryl Bachus-Keith, Dr. Sandra Hussey and Dr. Reynald Garma also provide medical services to children at the busy practice.

Not only has Black River Healthcare in Manning added a new facility in the last few months, they are also adding new providers.

The pediatric practice, located at 12 West South Street in Manning, recently added a new pediatrician.

Meet Dr. Nadia Carey.

Dr. Carey is a 34 year-old native of Nassau in the Bahamas. Soft spoken and gentle-mannered, she began her peds practice here in December of 2011.

“As a young person, I always wanted to be a pediatrician. It was always in my mind to take care of children. I just love kids,” she said.

Medical director Dr. Beryl Bachus-Keith said it was the same for her.

“I always knew I wanted to be a pediatrician,” she noted. “I never wavered from that goal.”

Dr. Carey brings with her an impressive roster of credentials.

She received her undergraduate degrees at the College of the Bahamas and Beloit College in Wisconsin in 1995 and 1998, respectively.

She then attended the University of the West Indies in Trinidad, where she received her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees in 2003. Those degrees are the British equivalents of American M.D. degrees.

She then did her internship at Princess Margaret Hospital in Nassau and her residency in pediatrics at Holtz Children Hospital, a division of Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida.

She said she chose to come to Manning because it was “an excellent opportunity.”

“I knew this was a place where I could serve the people of Clarendon County,” she said. “And it has been a pleasure meeting all the wonderful people here.”

Dr. Carey and her husband have made their home near the lake, where they have two daughters, six and two.

Dr. Carey said that while the lack of local pediatric specialists is a continuing challenge, the reward is all about seeing sick children recover from illness.

“It is a great feeling when you see a sick child, be able to help them and then see them again for a follow-up and they are well and smiling,” she said.

Black River Healthcare is a consortium of four medical practices. There is an office in Kingstree (which offers ob/gyn services) and an office in Timmonsville. In Manning, there are two offices: the pediatric office as well as an adults-only practice that opened in August of 2011. It is located at 11 West Hospital Street. Both offices are now open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. A practitioner is on call 24 hours a day. During regular business hours, the pediatrics practice can be reached at 433-4124; the adult practice can be reached at 433-4321.
