The Manning-Santee Post 68 American Legion baseball team ended last week with a loss and began the next with a victory.
On Friday, June 17, the team ended its third week with a lopsided 14-1 loss to Dalzell.
“They just killed us,” said Head Coach G.G. Cutter. “We just didn’t play at all. Everything we did went wrong and everything they did went right. It was just one of those games that happens every now and then. We were flat and they were sky high.”
Manning-Santee only gathered six hits on the night.
Jack Martin was the leading hitter as he went two-for-three.
“It’s one of those games you’ve got to learn from,” said Cutter.
On Monday, June 20, the Manning-Santee Post 68 rebounded with a 6-4 win over Camden. Camden was in second place in the standings with a record of 10-2.
“We just couldn’t wait to play again,” said Cutter. “We played good defense and we played like we’re capable of playing.”
Pitcher Kevin Cox started on the mound and threw seven innings allowing four runs, seven hits, five strikeouts, two walks and three earned runs.
Jamal Keels went three-for-three with three runs and Heath Smith also went three-for-three with two doubles and three RBIs.
Jack Martin, Douglas Ard, Ryan McNair and Justin Powell all had hits.
The key play was in the top of the ninth inning.
Manning held the 6-4 lead but Camden had runners on first and second base with no outs.
Manning executed a wheel-play that led to the final outs and helped them claim the victory.
“We beat a good team,” said Cutter. “It was good baseball.”
Following the Camden victory, Manning-Santee is now 7-6 overall.
Their next game is today at Hartsville at 7 p.m.
