Manning’s Driggers still takes the track ‘old school’

Competitive but fun-loving as well, Manning’s Paul Driggers and his #08 Nissan Sentra are a familiar sight at the Sumter Speedway.

There once was a day when drivers showed up at their local tracks just for the love of racing. Perhaps the goal was to earn the bragging rights of being the winner on that particular week or besting a rival driver. The prize money was secondary. It’s rare to find drivers like that today, but Manning’s own Paul Driggers fits the mold of the days of yore.

Driggers, in just his second year of racing, says “being able to race with my
sons” is his career highlight.

On Saturday nights, he tows his familiar red and white #08 Nissan Sentra through the gates of Sumter Speedway, parking his car between turns three and four beside son Andy’s #10 car. When not on the track, it’s where you can always find Driggers, and he’s there for one reason, to have fun and do a little racing.

And he’s not a back marker either. Finishing in the top half of the field is not out of the norm for the Manning native.

Last race, he picked up a fourth place finish-right on son Andy’s bumper in the Bomber Four feature.

The sportsmanship, love of the sport, and jovial demeanor displayed by Driggers,
makes him a sports figure the town of Manning can be proud to call one of their own.
