On Feb. 2, Manning Police Cpl. Tommy Burgess and Ptl. Cam Welsh responded to Major Drive in reference to a fight in progress. On arrival, the officers reported hearing yelling coming from inside the home. The officers found the occupants of the home in a small dark room. The officers reported finding a 35-year-old Manning man sitting on the chest of a 59-year-old Manning man with a 56-year-old Manning woman standing beside the men attempting to restrain the younger man from striking the older man. The officers reported having the younger man and woman exit the home, while the older man attempted to get to his feet. The officers said they found a sword on the floor near the older man’s head. The complainant, the woman, told officers that the younger man went into the room with the older man to get him to turn down the volume on his radio. The younger man reportedly told the officers that when he went into the room, the room went dark and he was “blindsided” with the sword. The younger man said he then took the sword from the older man, pushed him to the floor and then sat on him. The older man reportedly told the officers he was only trying to protect himself. Both men were transported to Clarendon Memorial Hospital. The older man was airlifted to a Charleston hospital due to facial injuries.
