LMA 1-0, defeats Florence Christian

Laurence Manning Academy varsity football Swampcats started their season with a bang defeating Florence Christian in Florence, 33-13.

The Florence Christian Eagles got on the scoreboard early in the first quarter leading 6-0. LMA Swampcats responded midway in the first quarter to take the lead, 7-6. The Swampcats never looked back, scoring three touchdowns in the second.

Quarterback J.T. Eppley launched one for 52 yards to Nick Gibbons who ran in for the touchdown near the end of the first half.

Going into the second half LMA led, 27-6.

The Swampcats scored again in the third quarter to capitalize on their lead. Florence Christian scored in the fourth, but that was not enough to catch up with LMA, giving the Swampcats the victory, 33-13.

The Swampcats had 386 total yards, 334 rushing and 52 passing. Top rushers were Cagney Brunson who had six carries on 171 yards and two touchdowns. Tyshawn Epps had seven carries on 53 yards and two touchdowns and Roman Ferguson had four carries on 73 yards.

Eppley had one completion on two attempts.

Top defensive players were Thomas Walker who had six tackles and one sack. Tysean Taylor and Mitch Bochette had four tackles each.

Austin Stout had three kicks.

LMA will travel to Cardinal Newman on Aug. 24. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
