Don’t be surprised if you don’t have to wait an hour to use a computer the next time you visit the Harvin Clarendon County Library.

Six computers were recently loaned to the Harvin Clarendon County Library as an access point to help job seekers with CareerOneStop basic services and to relieve some of the traffic on the machines. This makes the total computers now 18, according to Library Director Marilyn Tsirigotis.

“The computers will help with the volume of people who use them for job searches and training, on-line classes, and doing other necessary job-related assessments,” Tsirigotis said.

CareerOneStop is a U.S. Department of Labor-sponsored Web site that offers career resources and workforce information to job seekers, students, businesses, and workforce professionals. The Santee-Lynches Regional Council of Governments is a partner with this organization. Their Workforce Investment Board funds the One Stop System through the Workforce Investment Act. This funding enabled the purchase of the computers.

The library is an outreach center of One-Stop, according to Tsirigotis. She said that when the partnership with OneStop began back in September of last year, they had a representative come in from out of town to help patrons use the many features of the program which includes resumé building, interviewing techniques, job market trends, etc. The program has been tweaked a bit since then. Now library staff members will be trained to help people that are looking for jobs or working on resumés.

“What we’re going to do is help people with the basics and refer them to OneStop centers in Manning and Sumter,” said Tsirigotis.

Because the OneStop center in Manning is only open once a week, people can use the library for the same resources, according to Tsirigotis. All of the computers at the library also have a resume builder software program installed. They also have resources that help with a job skills assessment system that measures real-world skills.
