
Lawrence Hicks, 83, husband of Beatrice Lemon Hicks, died Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, at Tuomey Medical Center, Sumter. He’s the son of the late Morris Hicks and Marzetta Hicks and reared by his grandfather, the late Morris Hicks. He was born Oct. 7, 1928, in Camden, Ala.
In his youth, he joined Pine Level A.M.E. Church and served as a Sunday school teacher.
Lawrence graduate from Camden Academy and after graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged.
Lawrence moved to New York and worked for the Department of Juvenile Justice, New York, N.Y. and retired in 1997. He returned to Summerton in 1999. He joined Spring Hill A.M.E. Church where he was a faithful member.
Survivors are his wife, Beatrice Lemon Hicks of the home; a daughter, Michelle Hicks of Bronx, N.Y.; a step-daughter, Ernestine Green of Buffalo, N.Y.; a step-son, Glen Lemon of Summerton; three sisters, Pearl Robinson of Bronx, N.Y., Ernestine Dulaney of Camden, Ala. and Lucille Hicks of Bronx, N.Y.; a brother, Nathaniel Hicks of Camden, Ala.; three sisters-in-law, Ilean House, Bertha Miller, and Hollie James; adopted brother-in-law, Ivory Gipson; three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Remains will be placed in the church at noon with services beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at Spring Hill A.M.E. Church, 4309 Bill Davis, Summerton.
Rev. Dr. Willie J. Heggins II, Pastor, officiating.
Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the home, 1721 Ferris Street, Summerton.
