Lady Swampcats lose one, win one last week

The Lady Swampcats let one get away from them Jan. 10, at home, 45-37.

LMA was up 21-20 at the half, but a low scoring third quarter switched the momentum Wilson Hall’s way.

“We only scored three points in the entire third quarter,” LMA Girls Coach Mike Lowder said the day after the game. “We kept the game close. With four minutes left, it was still a two possession game, but we had to foul the ball handler and she made nine free throws down the stretch.”

The Lady Swampcats were only 50 percent from the free throw line, making just 11 of 21 attempts.

“Free throws are not free sometimes,” Lowder said.

The loss drops the Lady Swampcats to 11-5 on the season, 1-1 in conference play.

Lady Swampcat Julia Coward had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Emily McElveen scored in double figures with 15 points. Dixie Richburg added four points and Anna Lowder rounded out the scoring with one point.

The Lady Swampcats squeaked by with a win against the Lady Falcons on Jan. 12, at home, 44-39.

This is the second win for LMA against Ben Lippen’s Lady Falcons this year. The Lady ‘Cats last beat the Lady Falcons in December.

The Lady Swampcats came out of the half hot and outscored the Lady Falcons 19-2 in the third quarter to gain a lead of 16 heading into the final quarter.

The Lady Falcons had the upper hand in the fourth quarter outscoring the Lady ‘Cats 22-9 to make the game close toward the end.

For the second game in a row, Julia Coward led all scorers for the Lady Swampcats with 14 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Dixie Richburg also finished in double figures with 11 points. Emily McElveen scored eight points. Grace Beatson scored five points. Perrin Jackson finished the game with five points and 11 rebounds and Anna Lowder added one point.

“Jackson was big for us,” Lowder said. “Eleven rebounds is big, very big.”

The week of Jan. 16, the Lady ‘Cats face Robert E. Lee and Orangeburg Prep.
