Lady Monarchs and Lady Gators meet for the fifth time this season

The score might not be etched in stone, but one thing is certain. The Lady Monarchs and Lady Gators know what to expect when they meet for the fifth time this season in the second game of the District 9 Officials Christmas Tournament at 1:45 p.m. Dec. 28 at John F. Thames gymnasium.

The game will be physical with aggressive play on both ends of the court.

Manning’s Lady Monarchs have fared well against Lakewood’s Lady Gators by winning three of their four previous meetings; however the games weren’t decided until the fourth quarter.

The Lady Monarchs’ biggest win over the Lady Gators was in the finals of the Monarch Classic on Dec. 22 when the Monarchs pulled away after the half due to foul trouble by several of the Gators. The Lady Monarchs sealed the championship defeating the Lady Gators, 60-45.

The Lady Monarchs scattered the scoring around in the two games they played against the Lady Gators.

In their loss on Dec. 21 to the Gators, 48-37, Lanisha Brown led the scoring for the Lady Monarchs with 10 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Alexia Abraham followed with seven points and 13 rebounds. Brenna Nelson and Shanequa Muldrow netted five points each, while Makeba Harvin sank four points. Petra York contributed with three points and Imani Bell dropped in two points. Karen White scored one point, but pulled down seven rebounds.

In the championship win on Dec. 22, Nelson had a hot hand scoring 18 points, pulling down five rebounds, stealing the ball four times and assisting her teammates twice. Brown who led Lady Monarch scorers in their loss the day before netted nine points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Abraham, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, scored nine points. White continued rebounding well with 12. She scored eight points with three steals and two assists. York followed with six points. Muldrow netted five points, while Harvin scored four points and Bell rounded out the scoring with one.

The Lady Monarchs’ second game Wednesday will begin around 6:45 p.m. when they take on Lee Central’s Lady Stallions, a team they haven’t faced this year.

On Day Two of the three-day tournament, the Lady Monarchs won’t see action until 5:30 p.m. when they face Lamar’s Silver Foxes.
