Joseph Lynwood “J.L.” Meggs, 79, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, at Bethea Baptist Home in Darlington.
Mr. Meggs was born in Florence, a son of the late Samuel Edward and Janie Stricklen Meggs, and he was married to the late Jesna Jordan Meggs. J.L. was employed by Southern Bell Telephone beginning in 1951 and retired in 1983. He was a retired member of the South Carolina National Guard.
Survivors are two sons, Joey (Sandra) Meggs of Indialantic, Fla., and Steve Allen (Debbie) Meggs of Greenville; two brothers, William “Bill” Meggs of Lamar and Samuel E. Meggs of Virginia; four sisters, Annie Lois Hudson of Florence, Rhunette Liles of Garner, N.C., Juanita Coward of Florence and Vera Campbell of Columbia; and five grandchildren, Jennifer Meggs of Florence, Joseph Meggs of Summerton, and Jeremy, Jordan and Jessica Meggs of Greenville.
He was preceded in death by a son, Bruce Edward Meggs; and a sister, Jane Ella Odom.
Our family would like to thank the staff of Bethea Baptist Home for devoted care he received while a resident. We would also like to thank our dear friend Mary Brown for the love, care and support she provided Lynwood and our family.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, in the chapel of Layton-Anderson. Interment will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.
