Joseph Gilbert Hughes Sr.

Joseph Gilbert Hughes Sr., 78, beloved husband of Eleanor H. Hughes for 55 years passed away at his home peacefully during his sleep after a short illness on Friday, Aug. 31, 2012.

Born April 14, 1934, in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Joseph Grant Hughes and the late Lila Brown Hughes. Mr. Hughes loved his family and cherished every moment with his family. He was an avid golf player.

In addition to his wife, he leaves behind six cherished children: Eleanor Ruth Hughes (Bobby), Joye Hughes Wilson, Joseph Gilbert Hughes Jr. (Tammy), Juanita Gayle Shirah (Jim Bo), Jeffrey Grant Hughes, John Alan Hughes (Stephanie); two sisters, Lila Hughes Reed and Patricia Hughes Conyers (Tommy); five brothers, William Franklin Hughes (Dot), Robert Ray Hughes (Annie Jo), Thomas Harold Hughes (Mildred), Daniel Edward Hughes (Brenda), Terry Lynn Hughes (Stephanie) and his special pets Trooper and baby girl and their siblings.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012, in the Brewington Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Rev. Stacey V. McDonald.

The family will serve as pallbearers.
