James Lee Davis

James Lee Davis departed his earthly life on April 12, 2010, at his mother’s residence.

Born March 4, 1952, in Sumter County, he was a son and the second child of Earthay M. Davis Holmes and the late Lucious Davis Sr.

He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County, graduating from Mayewood High School Class of 1971. Shortly after graduation, he moved to New York and was employed for many years. He returned to South Carolina in 1983 and was employed with Sumter Utilities until he became ill. Mr. Davis was a kind-hearted person, who was always willing to give advice or be a listening ear when needed. He enjoyed spending time in his garden and learning the words of the Lord.

He leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memories: a devoted mother, Earthay M.D. Holmes; two daughters, Chimere Valentin and Chimese Hoyt, both of New York; four brothers, Lucious (Hattie) Davis Jr., Herbert (Ida) Davis and Jesse (Betty) Davis, all of Sumter, and Willie (Carolyn) Davis of Manning; three sisters, Betty (Marvin) Wilson of Florida, Deloris (Jimmy) Davis of Dalzell and Avone (Jeffrey) Hunter of Columbia; a grandson, Dwhygeshiqiue Valentin; 17 nieces and nephews; 18 grandnieces and grandnephews; three aunts; two uncles; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Parish and Mary W. Temoney and Harry and Hattie Davis.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 17, 2010, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Sumter, with the pastor, Bishop John Harris, assisted by Elder John Furgueron, eulogist.

Interment followed in Beulah AME Church cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.
