James Dewey Wells, 66, husband of Virginia Green Wells, died Sunday, July 15, 2012, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning. He was born Feb. 12, 1946, in Sumter, a son of the late Milton Wells and Isabella Tomlin Wells.
He received his formal education in the public schools of Sumter County.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters, Milton Wells Jr., Joe Wells, Johnnie Wells, Elizabeth Polite and Celestine W. Eagle.
At an early age, he joined Wesminister Presbyterian Church. He later joined Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church where he served on the Trustee Board.
He was employed by Clarendon County Public Works for 21 years and retired in 2009. He also did farm work in Clarendon County.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia G. Wells of the home; three children, Johnny Wells Sr. of Alcolu, James Dewey Wells Jr. of Berlin, Germany and Christine Wells Epps of Manning; 10 grandchildren, one he reared as his own, Johnny Wells Jr. of Fort Lewis, Washington; seven sisters-in-law, six brothers-in-law and two aunts.
The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. with services beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012, at Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Alcolu.

Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.
The family is receiving friends at the residence, 1460 Pine Crest Acres Alcolu.
