HARTSVILLE - Graveside services for Hugh Eldridge Gibson, 96, were held Friday at Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Charles Roberts officiated and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home served the family. The family received friends Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 104 East Home Ave., Hartsville, SC 29550.
Mr. Gibson, widower of Joan Teucher Gibson, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010. Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late John Rollins and Emily Stone Gibson. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Hartsville Masonic Lodge 173, York Rite and the Omar Shrine. He served his country during World War II as a radio operator in the 1st Army, 5th Corps, 56th Signal Battalion. He was a co-owner and operator, along with his late wife, of Gibson’s IGA Foodliner for over 25 years. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and was active in the community.
Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Sheila Gibson and Donnie K. Smith of Hartsville; son and daughter-in-law, Hugh Eldridge and Estelle Gibson Jr. of Augusta, Ga.; grandchildren, Corey Rollins Smith of Hartsville, Cedric Gibson of Augusta, and Christophe Gibson of Augusta; great-grandchildren, Dylan Smith and Cameron Smith; and niece, Aileen Teucher Abbott of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by his grandchild, Adrian Smith; and sisters, Lila Boyce and Olivia Outlaw.
Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home in Hartsville was in charge of arrangements.
