Gladys Currie Player, 90, widow of James Edward Player, died peacefully on Monday, Oct. 15, 2012, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Born April 1, 1922, in Mayesville, she was the daughter of the late John Marshall and Jennie Andrews Currie. She was a WWII Navy nurse, a member of Sardinia Presbyterian Church, served as a nurse for Clarendon County Health Dept., East Clarendon School District 3, and an operating room nurse at Clarendon Memorial Hospital. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a caregiver for many family members.
She is survived by a daughter, Laura Player Reeves and her husband Phil of Easley; two sons, James Edward “Jimmie” Player and his wife Alyce of Lexington, and Hugh Marshall Player and his wife Cyndi of Greenville; six grandchildren, Lyn Sullivan and her husband Kelly, Jennie Bilbo, David Player and his wife Paula, Hilary Caldwell and her husband David, Spencer Player and his wife Maria, and Michelle Reeves; and affectionately known as “G.G.” by her six great-grandchildren, Ryan Sullivan, Jaylee Bilbo, Dillon Caldwell, twins Hayden and Ethan Caldwell, and Miles Player.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct.18, 2012, at Sardinia Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Robert Jolly officiating, assisted by Dr. Gordon Reed. Burial will follow in the Sardinia-Gable Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, and at other times at the residence.
