One would expect an athletic director and head football coach to know a lot about Xs and Os, but what about iPads, the iCloud and emails.

Clarendon School District 1’s board of trustees learned Jan. 9, at its board meeting, that Coach Leonard Johnson has gone high-tech in his classroom.

“Coach Johnson is engaging technology in his classroom,” Superintendent Dr. Rose Wilder said Jan. 11. “He has integrated technology from sending assignments to receiving homework. Who would have thought a coach would be this involved in classroom technology? It’s amazing.”

Johnson, who teaches social studies, physical education and driver’s education at Scott’s Branch Middle/High School sends assignments to his students via his classroom’s high tech gadgetry and the students in turn send their homework back to him via technology.

“It’s working very well for him and the students,” Wilder said.

Johnson made his presentation to the board in a portion of the meeting called Vision where administrators and district personnel present to the board innovative projects that they are involved with that benefit the district.

The board recognized several employees of the month at the meeting.

Lottie Fleming, a math teacher, from Scott’s Branch High School and Ronald Brunson, a custodian, from St. Paul Elementary School were named Employees of the Month for their respective schools.

With the beginning of a new calendar year, the CSD1 board held elections. Wanda Thomas was voted back in as chairman. Anne Darby was voted back as vice chairman. Vastine Johnson and Dr. Bernard Richburg also retained their positions as secretary and parliamentarian, respectively.

Since the next scheduled board meeting would fall on a holiday, the CSD1 board voted to move its February meeting to Tuesday, Feb. 14, one week earlier than usual.
