Members of the Clarendon Pilot Club presented a “Brain Minders” program at the Manning Primary School and Laurence Manning Academy on March 8.
Brain Minders is a national program designed to teach young children about brain safety. Through the use of a skit, stuffed animals, puppets and a variety of props, children learn from some animal friends how to help care for their brains.
“In the skit, children learn the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet, fastening seat belts and playing where ground surfaces are not concrete,” said Pilot Club member Margaret Robertson, one of the presenters.
The children received a coloring sheet to reinforce these ideas and take a pledge to take care of their brains. They also received a certificate for their participation.
The program is sponsored in part by a grant from Pilot Club International and the generosity of the Bank of Clarendon.
Presenters for the March 8 Brain Minders programs were Peggy Benton, Vivian Epps, Ann English, Ginny Flynt, Ellen Tayor and Margaret Robertson. Pilot Club is a community service organization that focuses on brain injury or disease-related service projects.
The Clarendon Pilot Club also sponsors the annual Alzheimer’s Memory Walk and five scholarships to local students planning on entering the medical profession.
These scholarships are given in memory of Dotty McFaddin, the founder
of the Clarendon Pilot Club.
Local fundraisers which benefit Alzheimer’s patients and Alzheimer’s research include a yard sale in May, a bazaar in November and sale of the “Clarendon Collectibles,” which feature buildings in the county.
Clarendon Collectibles are $20 each and can be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce or the Clarendon County Archives.
