In our community, we have a wide variety of physicians serving an even wider array of medical needs.

From pediatricians to obstetricians to surgeons to family physicians, Clarendon County is home to more than 30 doctors who are committed to insuring the well-being of our citizens from cradle to grave.

First celebrated in 1933, Eudora Brown Almond, of Winder, Georgia, started Doctors Day as a way to mark the first use of general anesthesia in surgery on March 30, 1842.

Almond, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, used the occasion to send greeting cards to physicians and place flowers on the gravesites of deceased doctors. The red carnation is generally considered the symbol of Doctors Day.

On March 30, 1958, a Resolution Commemorating Doctors Day was adopted by the United States House of Representatives. In 1990, legislation was introduced in the House and Senate to establish a national Doctors Day.

Following overwhelming approval by the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, on Oct. 30, 1990, President George Bush signed Joint Resolution 366 designating March 30 as “National Doctors Day.”

In cooperation with the Cypress Foundation, Clarendon Health System will celebrate its roster of physicians on Doctors Day. The Foundation uses the occasion to solicit gifts in honor or memory of the area’s physicians, present and past.

“A wonderful way to honor or remember your physician is to make a contribution to the Cypress Foundation,” said Foundation Chairman Cleve Dowell. “We will send a card to your designated physicians notifying them of your thoughtfulness and use the donation to better the health of the Clarendon Memorial community.”

According to Dowell, the Cypress Foundation has raised over $25,000 though the generosity of the staff, physicians and community citizens through campaigns like Doctors Day. All contributions are tax deductible and go to support projects and programs that benefit the health status of Clarendon citizens.

“Physicians are the foundation of our healthcare system,” said Clarendon Health System CEO Edward Frye. “From our hospital, to our community clinics to our nursing homes, our doctors provide unparalleled service in a variety of settings. While we honor and respect them every day, it is great to set aside one special day to show our appreciation for all they do for our community.”

Making a contribution to honor your physician is as simple as mailing your contribution to The Cypress Foundation, P.O. Box 550, Manning, S.C. 29102, attention: Scherrie Cogdill, by March 26, 2010.

Please indicate the names of the physicians you wish to recognize and whether those contributions are in honor or memory of those so designated.
