Following the enormous popularity of the ABC hit, “Dancing with the Stars,” members of the Turbeville Community Association (formerly the Turbeville Business Association) have taken the lead in creating a similar event for Clarendon County’s own stars. And all for two good causes!
From County Council Chair Dwight Stewart to former Chief Magistrate Annelle Powell; from Sheriff Randy Garrett to Rep. Cathy Harvin, 16 “couples” kicked off their rehearsal schedule at the Turbeville home of Keith and Cheryl Wingard last Friday.
“Our local celebrities met their professional and semi-professional dance partners and selected their numbers,” said Cheryl Wingard, who chairs the event, to be held Aug. 21 at Sunset Acres in Cades.
“We have a total of 16 couples, she explained. “Each is paired with a dancer/instructor, including Clarendon’s own Matt and Lynn Evans.”
Within the next few weeks, a website for the event will go live, and members of the community will be able to “vote” for their favorite couple or couples. Votes will be $10 each and you can vote as many times as you like.
At the Aug. 21 event, there will be professional (not local) judges and dance couples will perform a one-and-a-half-minute dance to music by a live orchestra.
“We will actually have two winners,” Wingard explained. “There will be one winner from the popular vote and a performance winner from the judges.”
Proceeds from the “Dancing with the Clarendon Stars” event will be split between the Turbeville Free Will Baptist Children’s Home and Clarendon Habitat for Humanity.
“This community has perennially supported the Children’s Home,” said Town Administrator Pat Goodwin. “We are especially excited to help support Habitat as we are about to begin our first construction project with Habitat here in Turbeville.
Voting will begin as soon as the website is complete. Wingard said that should be before mid-June. Watch your Clarendon Citizen for an announcement regarding the website address.
