Larry Hewett/Clarendon Citizen - The Laurence Manning Academy Swampcats will have their hands full with Porter Gaud Tonight for homecoming unlike the early season win over Heathwood Hall. Cat Coach Ken Kellahan says Porter Gaud is a top tier team. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m. at LMA.

Pink is typically a color worn by girls, but at tonight’s football game between Laurence Manning and Porter Gaud, those rough and tough Swampcat players will be sporting hot pink sweat bands.

Why? To promote cancer awareness.

Tackle Pink is the brain child of two seniors, Elizabeth Black and Myles Lee, who embraced the topic of cancer awareness as a school service project.

Not only will the Swampcats be wearing pink on the field, but the LMA cheerleaders will be wearing pink ribbons, pink shoelaces and T-shirts that say, “Tackle Pink. Fight like a Swampcat.”

LMA’s cheerleaders are also giving Porter Gaud’s cheering squad pink ribbons for tonight’s game.

The Tackle Pink T-shirts will be on sale at the game along with hot pink helium balloons that can be decorated. The balloons will be released during a halftime program.

LMA’s cheerleaders have also prepared a lot of baked goodies decorated in pink that will be on sale during the game.

Proceeds from Tackle Pink will benefit childhood cancers.

Tonight is also Senior Night at LMA and students from each sport will be recognized at halftime.

What’s going to happen during the game?

“Porter Gaud is a top tier team,” said LMA head football coach Ken Kellahan. “They have a great quarterback in Hudson Worthy. They have four or five really good receivers. We’re going to have our hands full.”

Kellahan described the Porter Gaud defense as “solid.”

To come out on top, Kellahan said LMA would have to get Porter Gaud to play a Swampcat type of game.

“We have to keep their quarterback off the field,” Kellahan said. “We have to keep focused and play well.”
