Beulah Elizabeth Smith Mahoney

Beulah Elizabeth Smith Mahoney, 100, widow of John Bunyan Mahoney, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at National Health Care in Sumter.

Born May 4, 1912, in New Zion, she was the firstborn daughter of the late William Henry Smith and the late Annie Elizabeth Kelly Smith. She was raised in the “corner” section of Clarendon County. She was a member of Midway Presbyterian Church from birth, attended Oakdale Community School and graduated from high school in New Zion. She married John Bunyan Mahoney on April 21, 1933. She then joined Manning First Baptist Church. She loved God, her church and her family dearly. She enjoyed growing and sharing flowers. She worked as a secretary for the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office for 26 years.

She is survived by two daughters, Ann M. Plowden (Sammy) and Mary Jo M. Gamble, both of Manning; a son-in-law, Rev. James E. “Jim” Clark of Effingham; a sister, Garnet S. Thompson of Alcolu; a brother, Harvey Smith (Sue) of Wilmington, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Eddie Plowden (Nancy), John Plowden (Becky), Suzanne P. Johnson (Mickey), Larry Parrott (Sharon), Mike Parrott (Jo), Judy Powell (Brad), Libby Gamble and Rob Gamble (Holly); 16 great-grandchildren, Seth and Spencer Plowden, Coker and Sam Plowden, Lauren and Bland Johnson, Ben Parrott, Casey P. Tyson (Justin), Zachary Biggs, Peyton, Brogdon and Luke Gamble, Lane and Corey Parrott, and Taylor and Hannah Powell; a great-great-grandchild, Ellery Kate Tyson; a special cousin, Mary Craig Corder (Andy) of Florence; and several nieces, nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Mahoney Parrott Clark; a son-in-law, L.A. Parrott; three brothers, W.H. Smith, Claude Smith and Ray Smith; and two sisters, Mary S. McLaughlin and Helen S. Ellsworth.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, at Manning First Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Vassar officiating. Burial will follow in Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Eddie Plowden, John Plowden, Larry Parrott, Mike Parrott, Rob Gamble and Mickey Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be the T.E.L. Sunday school class of Manning First Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the fellowship hall of Manning First Baptist Church and other times at the residence, 2660 Paxville Hwy., Manning.

The family would like to give special thanks to the Iris Hall nurses of National Health Care, Ciris Hospice and caretakers, Minnie Frierson and Barbara Pugh.
