2/21/12 - Check it out in Clarendon County

This third week of the month is sort of traditionally quiet it seems. This one is no different, although by the time Friday gets here, it will be jumping. I recommend a hearty breakfast of Wheaties from here to Sunday.

Be on the lookout for the exhibition of local artist Anna Lang Holmes at the Weldon Art Corridor. She will be bringing her own works as well as a yet undisclosed number of artists along with her show. Anna is an incredible illustrator and sculptor, and mosaic artist. The Art Corridor is open Monday through Friday, during regular business hours and whenever there is a performance going on.

The Francis Marion Living History Encampment starts on Feb. 24, at Camp Bob Cooper. Their Lantern Walk at dusk is a chance to see, hear, smell and maybe even taste, the life of the Revolutionary Times. They will be working with county third graders on Thursday and Friday, giving them a chance to see history come alive before their very eyes. P.S. I hope they realize that iPads, cell phones and HD televisions not only weren’t invented yet, but there was no place to plug them in either!

Also on Feb. 24, the Jr. Chamber will be hosting a corn hole tournament at the Armory on Raccoon Road. Corn hole is basically a beanbag toss for grownups and it is a lot of fun. The commentary is usually as good as any standup comic. Be there by 6:30 p.m. to get in on the excitement.

If you are looking for something a little less raucous on Feb. 24, the Cypress Center After 5 concert series will welcome jazz musicians Adrian Crutchfield and Eboni. The show includes a luscious heavy hors’ d’oeuvre buffet, as well as some adult beverages. These concerts always make for a lovely night out. And they support the Cypress Foundation.

On Saturday, Feb. 25, there are three events that are calendar-worthy: the Jr. Chamber Oyster Roast, 6:30 at the Armory; another night of the Francis Marion Living History Encampment and the Columbia City Ballet, will bring the ballet, The Little Mermaid to Weldon’s stage. Many local ballet aficionadas will be playing roles in this sweet story by the Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen about a young mermaid willing to give up her life in the sea and her identity as a mermaid to gain a human soul and the love of a human prince.

I don’t know what life as a mermaid would be like, but I’d take on two good feet for a prince in a skinny minute.

The Free Will Baptist Home for Children’s annual fundraiser at the Low Country Fox Pen will be held March 2-3. A dinner, dog show and entertainment will be held the night of March 2. The dogs will be turned loose at 7 a.m. sharp on March 3. Following breakfast, the auction will begin until lunch and again in the afternoon until all items are sold. Auction items are needed as well as volunteers to pick up the items. For more information on how you can help, call Wayne Oxendine at (803) 968-5660.

These are good folks who have been doing this noble thing for many years as the prime fundraiser for the Children’s Home. Despite rumors to the contrary, the Children’s Home has not nor will be closing. They do, however, need your help more than ever.

At 3 p.m., March 4, the Summerton Rotary will present Carson Entertainment’s Magical Mystery Show. This is the real deal, folks! This super magical show has been seen on FOX TV’s “Masters of Illusions” and has been voted Las Vegas’ #1 family attraction for two years running! This is a show full of fun for the whole family to enjoy! Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. All ticket sales support the Summerton Rotary Club. For more information, call 433-2800 or email at Citizen@ClarendonCitizen.com. Stay tuned to www.clarendoncitizen.com for previews of most of these events!

On March 10, the Cypress After 5 concert series will host The Return, an amazing Beatles tribute band. Now that’s speaking to MY generation. More details on that next week.

If you are holding an event to which the public would be welcome, please let me know and I will try to feature it here.

Rest up for the next few days, ‘cause it’s about to get crazy up in here!

Go have some fun, Clarendon County!
